Centennial's Academic Bowl team placed fifth of 224 teams from across the country at the High School Quiz Bowl National Championship on May 28-29. Team members are: seniors Jenny Collier and Katherine Cannella, juniors Adam Silverman, and sophomore Nikhil Vallabhaneni. See the winners bracket. Koblitz Wins at State Track Meet
Senior Brooke Koblitz was crowned state champion in the 1600 meter race at the state track meet held in Albany on May 12-14. Koblitz led the race every step of the way, eventually demolishing the field with a strong move in the closing 300 meters to finish in 5:05.23! Koblitz concluded her Centennial career by setting a new school record in the 800 meter race with the time of 2 minutes 15.91 seconds and earning a 3rd place finish. A University of Georgia Track and Cross Country signee, Koblitz wraps up her incredible career at Centennial with four individual track records, four relay track records, the school cross country record, and a state championship!
Senior Wins State Reflections Program
Senior Ashley Rosenberg won the state-level award in the literature category of the National PTA 2010-11 Reflections Program. Rosenberg, who will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Woodruff Arts Center on March 27, will now move on to the national competition. Rosenberg was also recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the judges in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and has qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Social studies teacher Ben Crosby has been named Teacher of the Year. Kathy McGonegal, media center paraprofessional, is the Professional Employee of the Year. Both were honored at a luncheon sponsored by the Executive Student Council on February 21. The PTSA provided desserts for the luncheon, as well as $200 gift cards for the employees of the year. The four teacher finalists, Pamela Kaye, Joanna Beugnon, Kay Sand, and Jama Willbanks, each received a $50 gift card.
All-Region BasketballSenior basketball players Nathan Harries, Jaylen Owens, and Lindsey Rosenberg were named to the Region 6-AAAAA All Region basketball team. They were honored during the region finals basketball game on February 19.
Junior Advances in US Physics CompetitionAdam Silverman has been named a semi-finalist in the 2011 US Physics Team Competition. He advances to the semi-final round and will compete again in March. This is the third consecutive year in which a Centennial student has been named a semi-finalist for selection on the US Physics Olympic Team. Silverman had one of the highest scores out of approximately 3,100 test takers, with only 384 students making it to the semi-finals. He was one of five students in Georgia advancing to the semi-final round. This competition is to determine the team that will represent the United States at the 42nd International Physics Olympiad to be held in Bangkok, Thailand this summer. | Announcement
German Honor Society Inducts Six
Six students were inducted into the German National Honor Society on Feb 16. The students, currently in German III Honors, have maintained a 90 or above in the last three semesters of German and an overall grade point average of 85 or above. On January 26, Secretary of State Brian Kemp presented a group of students, who are also Horseshoe Bend residents, with a Certificate of Appreciation signed by former Governor Sonny Perdue, in recognition for their participation in the Annual Horseshoe Bend Food Drive for the past ten years. The annual food drive, started by Margy Ladd and her daughter Allie Scherer, collected 10,000 food items to benefit North Fulton Charities last October.

The school science fair was held on Wednesday, January 19. Thirty projects in nine categories were presented. Girls' Fencing Sweeps TournamentOn January 8, Centennial hosted a fencing tournament and competed against Milton, Pope, and North Springs. The Lady Knights swept all five places on the girls side. Senior Melinda Erickson won 1st place, senior Katherine Cannella took 2nd place, senior Jenny Collier and freshman Dorothy Cannella tied for 3rd, and junior Esther Chang took 5th. In the boys' tournament, junior Eli Hanson took 3rd.
Students Earn Gold Work Ready Assessment Certification
Seniors Brian Dix, Taylor Desalvo, and Lauren Reid achieve gold level on the Work Ready Assessment. The Work Ready assessment is administered by ACT's nationally accredited WorkKeys system and measures both core skills and work habits. Core skil ls assessments measure skills in applied mathematics, reading for information, and locating information, three skills that are highly important to the majority of jobs in the workplace. The work habits assessment measures work-related attitudes and behaviors in areas that are trainable and coachable, such as carefulness, cooperation, discipline, and drive. They will be honored at an upcoming school board meeting.
Cheerleader Selected as Academic All Star
Senior cheerleader Julie Freeman was featured as GPB's Academic All Star Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec 27. Seventy-two winners from across Georgia were selected for the 2010-2011 School Year. Winners will receive a plaque, with an additional plaque for their high school. Students Advance in PTSA Reflections ProgramThree students have been named winners in the PTSA North Fulton Council Level Reflections program. Senior Ashley Rosenberg was selected as a winner in the literature category and sophomore Nick Sheridan was selected as a winner in the photography category. These students' entries will advance to judging at the state level. Senior Stef LaTorre's entry in the visual arts category was selected for honorable mention and his work will be displayed at the Council's reception in January.
Centennial Named Distinguished DelegationTwenty-eight students participated in the second annual Southern United States High School Model United Nations Program at Emory University from November 12-14. The weekend simulation began late Friday afternoon and ended at noon Sunday. The Centennial students were in competition with over 500 students from public and private high schools from six different southern states. All of the Centennial students were exemplary representatives of our community and did very well in the competition. The following students received individual awards: senior Oliver Ladd, junior Gary Castellanos, and sophomores Ken Taylor, Sean Regan, and Eric Beeler. Three delegation awards were given at the conclusion of the conference. Centennial received the Distinguished Delegation Award for all the students in our group.
Cheerleading 1st at State Sectionals

The boys' and girls' varsity cross country teams have qualified for the state meet for the fourth year in a row. The boys' and girls' varsity regional races were both won by Knights. Junior Kane Davis won the boys race and senior Brooke Koblitz took 1st in the girls race, breaking the school record for the second time this season. She finished 3.1 miles in 18:40. Other outstanding runners were senior Kelly Meyer who finished third, senior Trevor Daniels who finished fifth, and freshman Haley McKay who finished ninth.
Students Named GHP Semi-FinalistsSeventeen students have been named semi-finalists for the 2011 Governor's Honors Program. They will participate in state-level interviews in January and February. Less than 1 percent of the 10th and 11th graders in the state are selected for this honor and unique summer learning experience.

Five students placed at the Georgia High School Fencing League tournament hosted by Centennial on October 30. Lassiter, Roswell, and Centennial took part in the tournament with 28 girls and 27 boys competing. On the boys side, senior Jonathan Riposa took third. In the girls' tournament, seniors Melinda Erickson and Alyssa Lawrence tied for third, freshman Dorothy Cannella took second, and senior Katherine Cannella won first place.
Varsity Cheerleaders Take 2nd in Roswell RoundupVarsity competition cheerleaders placed 2nd at the Roswell Roundup Cheer Competition on October 23. The squad will be competing for the region title on Saturday, November 6 at North Gwinnett High School at 4:30pm. If Centennial places in the top four, they will qualify to compete for the state title.
Lady Knights Named to All-Region TeamSenior pitcher Jamie Gottlieb and junior short stop Megan Veringa have been named to the 2010 6-AAAAA All-Region softball team.
Students Participate in Georgia Tech's High School Model United Nations ProgramFifty students (ranging from tenth through twelfth grade) participated in the Georgia Tech High School Model United Nations program on October 20-21. The Centennial students were assigned to play the role of diplomats from China, Mexico, India, and Sweden and worked under the leadership of the six students who were named leaders of their delegations: seniors Wright McCraney, Asheton Board, Alec Watkins, and Kelsie Lee Kostakos, junior Gary Castellanos, and sophomore Eric Beeler. This effort required a great deal of individual research, writing, and delegation meetings prior to the actual conference. At the simulation itself, students had to engage in public speaking, role playing, resolution writing and, consensus building. At the conclusion of the conference, two Centennial students were recognized with individual delegate awards: senior Kurt Gloede and sophomore Anna Squires.
Senior Earns Black Belt in Iaido
Senior Billy Clark passed his Shodan (1st degree black belt) test in Mugai Ryu Iaido on October 10. Mugai Ryu is one of several forms of Iaido, a traditional Japanese sword art. Billy tested in Chicago, IL before a committee of the five highest-ranking Iaido practitioners in the world. These men fly in from Japan once every two years, and this seminar is the only opportunity to test in the United States.
Senior Breaks Ladies Cross Country School RecordSenior Brooke Koblitz earned a new school record for the girls 5K at the Cass Invitational at Dellinger Park in Cartersville on October 6. Koblitz ran the 5K in 18:55, beating the old school record held by fellow senior Katie June, by 15 seconds.
Students Named National Merit Semi-FinalistsSeniors Katherine Cannella, Billy Clark, Katie June, and Aine O'Connor have been named semi-finalists in the first round of the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among 84 Fulton students to earn this distinction. | Article

Senior Chris Fall was selected to participate in the Economics for Leaders program being conducted at Emory University from July 25-August 1, 2010. Fall is one of 32 students from around the country who is honored by being accepted into the Foundation for Teaching Economics' Atlanta Economics for Leaders program. All of the students have been selected because they have demonstrated excellent leadership potential.
During the week-long Economics for Leaders program, students attain an understanding of economic reasoning principles and how to employ these concepts for successful and effective leadership. Additionally, participants achieve a heightened awareness of the impact their decisions have on others and the responsibility that awareness imposes. Economics for Leaders is an unparalleled learning and growing opportunity. Students who have attended Economics for Leaders programs in prior years have called it "the experience of a lifetime."

Junior Elizabeth Fall was selected Centennial to attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar. The event was held at Georgia Southwestern University, in Americus, Georgia with more than 135 rising juniors in attendance from June 4-6, 2010. The participants were presented with viewpoints on important issues and were encouraged to think critically about leadership, and also to begin to identify their own particular leadership strengths. For nearly four decades, the HOBY program has worked diligently at helping young people make a difference and become positive catalysts for change in the home, in the school, in the workplace, and in the community. As one of the nation's foremost nonprofit, non-tax supported youth leadership development organizations, HOBY is respected worldwide.
He became an educator to help all children achieve their dreams. He taught high school history for nine years in Rockdale and DeKalb counties. He is in his 15th year as an administrator (five as an assistant principal and 10 as a high school principal). He is coming to Centennial from R. L. Osborne High School in Cobb County where he has been the principal for the past seven years.
